Expansion continues
The weather is holding at decent temperatures for working outdoors. When I said we hoped to have the ground leveled out before winter I thought it was a pipe dream. Here is where we left off…

Workyard expansion
Never thought I would say this but we started expanding the work yard today. Going inwards on each side of the road about 30-40 ft. For now it will be a place to put flitches and rejects off the mill. Afterwards it’ll be space for a couple 10×20 sheds. Its a sloped hill, so dirt removed from the left side will be used to fill in the right side.

Weekend update
Happy Thanksgiving. We had a busy weekend.
On Friday afternoon, we met up with Dave Restoule, the arborist we worked with a few times before to take down the remaining trees at my Moms place. In May (hard to believe it was that long ago) we worked with Dave to take down, I think it was 4 maple trees that were 70 feet tall. Got a nice bit of firewood from those. Some were rotten at the base though.

Tree removal in Addington Forks
What you see here is the before and after of a job we completed in less than 2 days this week. Click on any image to view full size.

Work yard expansion
Finally getting some seat time to move the pile of dirt in the work yard. It’ll be good to have the extra space to maneuver around.

Wood slice dehydrator
The ultimate in woodworking and baking… birch cookies 🙂 I converted the solar panel to see if this would work.

Sunday morning log on
A cool crisp Sunday morning, about 1ºC. A good time to get some logs that were felled earlier in the summer.
-
Blue denim pine boards
This pine log was from a tree felled in the spring on a nearby property. The tree remained where it was felled, limbs and all still attached, to allow the moisture to be pulled out over the heat of the summer.

Pulling some logs
If you never heard of Portable Winch, they are a Quebec based manufacturer of portable winches. I use this one linked to the truck bed tie downs to pull logs onto the trailer.

Wood spirits
Clearly what caught my attention was this old photo showing the tremendous pile of cant beams! Honestly, we will never see piles of wood like that again…ever. But what caught my eye immediately after that was the appearance of a face on the end of one of those beams.
