A Few More Map Orders… Everyone Different!
A few weeks ago we had an order come in for a white washed map of Prince Edward Island (PEI). While any province or country can be scrolled out of wood, the islands are most easily recognizable. Again we knew we could get 2 map projects out of one cutting session.

Another Very Large Map of Nova Scotia
If you remember when we made the custom map of Nova Scotia on a grey weathered backer board a few weeks ago, then you remember we had the negative ready to create a second map. So that’s what we did. Here is a close up of the details on the Cape Breton end of the map. The dime is there for size and scale.

Making an Eagle Whirligig
We see a LOT of eagles in our neck of the woods. There is a fish hatchery just down the road. That could have something to do with it. They patrol the edge of the lake looking for fish. Every once in a while we actually see them dive into the lake for fish. They often park themselves on the highest tree on the edge of the water. So beautiful. We decided to build a whirligig, and what better than an eagle for our first kick at the can.

Making a Large Nova Scotia Map
We had another order come in for a custom size map of Nova Scotia. The customer requested it be on a rustic backboard measuring 48 x 24 inches. That makes for a large, heavy, finished piece. Here is the template we printed out for this project.

Nova Scotia Crib Board
We finally got an afternoon in the workshop so we had to put our time to good use. On order was a wood map of Nova Scotia crib board. Normally we print our maps out on self-adhesive paper and thats what we thought we had done until we got to the workshop and discovered we had printed them on vinyl. Me nerves. We decided to use them anyways and just tape the image to the boards.

Large Wooden Cape Breton Map
As I mentioned on Monday, we had a custom order for a large 24 x 32 inch wood map of Cape Breton. For those of you unfamiliar, it is an island joined to the mainland of Nova Scotia by a causeway. This is how all maps start out, especially the larger ones.

Weekend Projects end of April
I swear our next woodworking project might have to be to build an Arc. Seriously. What is it with weekends and rain. And this time of year it is most days in between as well. The good news is the lawn is greening up nicely, the bad news is we are getting closer to mowing season. Oh well, there are plenty of projects to keep us busy indoors.

Scroll Saw Class is in Session.
If you ever thought you couldn’t use a scroll saw, you might be wrong. Our friend Greg, who took the aerial pictures of our neck of the woods from the helicopter, asked Jim to make him a custom piece for a friend of his. Then he had a brilliant idea. He asked if he could help, and that would give it more meaning (and him more bragging rights).

Christmas Tree and More Maps
Hope you had a good weekend. We had just the right amount of busyness (is that even a word) and down time. We finally got our tree up and decorated. You might think that living on land that used to be a Christmas tree farm, we would have a real tree, but you would be wrong. While the trees were trimmed at one time, they haven’t been touched in several (maybe 15-20) years. They are way too big to come indoors. Sooo… artificial it is. This is one we have had for about 20 years and it will soon be time for a new one.

Busy Weekend
I love Saturdays for some reason. I guess its because it feels like it is the beginning of two days of freedom to do what ever we choose. Although this time of year we always end up doing some office work to get ahead of Monday.
Besides that we managed a few other things, like a much needed power wash of the skidsteer. We didn’t want to leave the mud on it and have that freeze in place.
