Saw Mill Laser Installation
A laser beam allows a sawyer to see on the log where the blade will travel before starting the cut. This can be handy as it will save some time when cutting crooked logs or when you want specific features added to, or cut from, live edge slabs. Laser beam kits are available for many of the bigger, more expensive saw mills but for our small manual mill, no luck. Time to make up a DIY kit. Beam me up!

One of the services I will be providing in the coming months for other sawyers is to sharpen bandsaw blades. There are two primary bits of equipment to perform that task, a ‘setter’ and a ‘sharpener’.

Water Woes
We had a beautiful warm-ish weekend considering it is getting late into November. Can’t complain yet! If you remember we were swimming in mud. We still are, but we are working on it.

Expansion continues
The weather is holding at decent temperatures for working outdoors. When I said we hoped to have the ground leveled out before winter I thought it was a pipe dream. Here is where we left off…

Workyard expansion
Never thought I would say this but we started expanding the work yard today. Going inwards on each side of the road about 30-40 ft. For now it will be a place to put flitches and rejects off the mill. Afterwards it’ll be space for a couple 10×20 sheds. Its a sloped hill, so dirt removed from the left side will be used to fill in the right side.

How to install an hour meter on machinery
Equipment maintenance is important. You work hard for your money so when you spend that money on something, you want that something to last as long as possible. When it comes to big and small engines, the common maintenance task is the oil change. An hour meter can solve that problem.

Poplar logs are done… finally.
Annnndddd the poplar logs are done! About 93 logs and we got enough to board and batten the 40ft shipping container as well as these 5 crates of 1″ boards and one tall crate of bigger boards ( mostly 2×10’s, 2×12’s).

Weekend update
Happy Thanksgiving. We had a busy weekend.
On Friday afternoon, we met up with Dave Restoule, the arborist we worked with a few times before to take down the remaining trees at my Moms place. In May (hard to believe it was that long ago) we worked with Dave to take down, I think it was 4 maple trees that were 70 feet tall. Got a nice bit of firewood from those. Some were rotten at the base though.

Back in business
Wednesday afternoon we ran errands and that included picking up fuses for the skidsteer’s grapple. That evening Jim put in the new fuses and we were back in business. Thursday morning we worked in the office and then headed out to the mill to put a dent in the pile of logs we still have to mill.
Before we could begin we had to move the pile of lumber we already milled.
