    Weekend Happenings

    August 14, 2017 /

This weekend Jim was feeling much better but the weather didn’t cooperate enough for us to be productive on our outdoor projects. Two more days of rest never hurt anyone I always say.

    opportunities along the way

    August 26, 2015 /

Sometimes a chore, like taking out the garbage to the road, can have its blessings. Today we retrieved a mitt full of wild raspberries! And of course, we shared with our feathered friends. They sure were curious about the red bump on the end of their perch!

    Perched hummingbird

Jus a couple pictures of the hummingbirds today after filling the feeder. They drank nearly 7 cups of the stuff yesterday. Click on the images to get the full size pictures. Use for your desktop wallpaper if you like.

    Hummingbird cameo

    August 8, 2015 /

I tried a little experiment of filming a hummingbird feeding up close. Then I filmed that scene on another camera. I then tired to compile a picture-in-picture with IMovie 10.0.9 but it was not to happen. Limitations of the software so far as I can figure. So I made this little video, showing one scene and then the other.

    Finger perched hummingbird

    August 5, 2015 /

We had bought a new feeder today and added it to our little collection of hummingbird feeders. I decided to try and see if I could get them to perch on my finger while they came for a feeding. It was an amazing feeling. 🙂

A close encounter with a hummingbird

    August 5, 2015 /

We love these hummingbirds that have come by this year to entertain us. Yesterday I got so close to one while feeding, it was crazy. I posted a video overnight. Its best viewed with the HD and full screen options.

    Hummingbirds waiting for a refill

    August 4, 2015 /

I took a video using a GoPro Hero3+Black this morning, plenty of fog on the lake, looks like its going to be a humid day. Also captured the hummingbirds with the feeding pretty much empty from overnight. This video is best watched in Full Screen mode.

    Monday morning moonshine

    nectar for the birds

This year we’ve taken to refilling the feeder once a day, first thing in the morning. A 3 cup fill typically lasts all day and is bone dry by sunset. When the feeder is dry for a while we observe the hummingbirds are little more co-operative once its refilled.

    Hummingbirds at the feeder

    August 2, 2015 /

The hummingbirds seem to have lessened their aggressive behaviour in exchange for some time sharing on the feeder. There are still some arguments though!
