Wood Maps…Lots Of Them

Earlier on in the spring, we received a request for two large maps. One of Nova Scotia and one of Prince Edward Island. This past week we got to work.

Both maps were to be four feet long and the customer had scrolled through the previous work section of our site picking out one that we used for inspiration. Remember, if you don’t see what you had in mind on our For Sale page, don’t forget to check out some of our previous maps. Here was their pick.

This was actually the very first map we ever made and we still have it hanging on our wall.

For this one we decided to paint it before it was cut out.

Painting pallet boards.

With the boards chosen, cut to length, glued together, sanded, and painted, oh, and our paper map sized on the computer and printed out, it was time to cut on the scroll saw.

Check out how tiny and thin these scroll saw blades are.

Jim went through 17 blades cutting out these 2 maps. When they get dull, it is harder to cut through the wood and then they break, and when that happens it would scare a fella to death.

Here are the two maps finished and sent in the mail today…I present to you…NS and PEI.

Jim posted those online and another customer reached out with a request. They had scrolled through the For Sale section of our site and saw this map…

…and requested a backer board and a frame be added. No problem. She gave us the colors she wanted and after a few emails back and forth, we landed at this. So pretty.

She also wanted a smaller “X” on a weathered backer board. The “X” in this case stands for St Francis Xavier University or STFX. Our local university.

These two will get boxed up and go out in the mail tomorrow.

Always fun making maps. So that’s 4 down, 2 to go. And one of those 2 is a NS flag painted on a small map. Wish me luck.

Later.
