8 years operating a firewood kiln
Today we provide a detailed assessment of our firewood kiln after operating it for eight years and completing over one hundred drying sessions.
The video highlights several structural modifications, including the addition of automotive gaskets to improve the door’s air seal and the use of commercial dehumidifiers following a primary equipment failure. While the spray foam insulation and external wooden boards have remained durable, the facility faces ongoing challenges from pest infestations, specifically carpenter ants and mice nesting within the walls. To combat these issues, we demonstrate using specialized spray foam to block entry points and deter rodents from damaging the structure. Despite some metal corrosion and the deteriorating condition of the loading carts, the kiln continues to effectively reduce moisture levels in hardwood cords for our kiln dried firewood business. This overview serves as a practical guide for maintaining small-scale timber drying operations over a long duration.
