What did Jim just buy?
In this video, we reveal the contents of several recently delivered online orders containing an eclectic mix of practical supplies.
Jim explains that he purchased chainsaw maintenance tools, such as a clutch removal device and master links, alongside brush cutter components for Gina. The delivery also included polyester clothing designed for moisture-wicking and a large roll of plastic netting intended for a firewood drying experiment. To track their daily activity, Jim surprised Gina with pedometer devices, setting up a friendly fitness competition between them. Other miscellaneous items, including garage door weather stripping and durable key clips, highlight the household’s focus on utility and outdoor maintenance. This overview demonstrates we use these varied purchases to facilitate both our work projects and personal hobbies.
Jim plans to use the black netting—which is the same material used for bagging firewood—to conduct a drying experiment on their personal supply of firewood.
His specific plan involves the following steps:
- Wrapping the Crates: He intends to wrap his 32-cubic-foot (quarter cord) wood crates with the 3-foot by 100-foot netting. He will wrap the material around the outside of the crates and then place a cover over the top to keep out rain and snow.
- Comparative Testing: To test the effectiveness, he will leave other crates from the same batch of wood unwrapped (using only a top cover) to see which ones dry better.
- Heat Absorption: Jim’s theory is that the black netting will absorb heat, warming the wood inside2.
- Venting Moisture: Because the netting is vented, he believes it will allow for proper airflow so that moisture is not trapped, ultimately resulting in the wood drying faster.
Jim notes that while this isn’t practical for the many of crates in their yard, he believes it is a worthwhile experiment for his personal wood stash.
