DIY Wooden Door Stop
A couple of months ago we laid new hardwood floors in the bedroom and when we put the room back together we decided to take apart the floor mirror and hang it on the back of the bedroom door.
It made the room seem bigger since it wasn’t taking up valuable floor space. One problem though…the door wouldn’t stay open. With the extra weight it just slowly closed. This room is in near proximity to the wood stove so I didn’t mind having the door closed to keep it cool for sleeping. But…we are getting into the colder nights and we woke up yesterday morning and it was c.o.l.d. outside of the covers with the door closed, but not bad in the rest of the house.
I decided to come up with a door stop we could use when we wanted the door to be open. I checked on Pinterest and saw a bunch of cute ones…a cat, a dog, a whale, a bird, a mouse, all cute but not what I wanted. Then I saw what looked like a man pushing on the door to keep it open. It was made of silicone and was blue but I imagined it would look good in wood.
I drew up this pattern on paper until I liked it, I also drew a bird incase the man didn’t work out.
I headed out to the workshop and found a board that was the perfect width. I cut a piece big enough for this project using the miter saw.
Then it was back in the house to transfer the pattern onto the wood with tracing paper.
The first cuts I made were anywhere there were straight lines using the bandsaw.
Then headed to the scroll saw to finish up with the rounded parts.
Here he was all cut out.
After a bit of hand sanding, it was time for black paint. What’s funny is I was making this by myself to surprise Jim but when I went in the house, this is what I found.
Here he is doing his job…
And a little closer…
Now we can keep the door closed but have it stay open on the upcoming cold winter nights.
