Alberta and Nova Scotia Maps
There are a lot of Nova Scotians working and living in Alberta. One such family contacted us to make them two maps, one for each province. This is our first time cutting out a map of Alberta.
Customer asked for the maps to be sized proportionately, and since Alberta is much bigger in size naturally, we shrunk Alberta by a few inches to suit the size of NS. Sorry, not sorry.

By the time I grabbed the camera and headed out to the workshop, Jim had Alberta all cut out. As you can see, Alberta has 3 1/2 straight sides, makes for fast scrolling. The NS map took much longer with the detailed coast.
With both maps cut out, we headed indoors to begin the finishing process. Since this wood is poplar, we gave each piece a coat of wood conditioner so the stain would take more evenly. Oh yeah, forgot to say that the customer wanted these pieces stained dark walnut. A first as well. Maybe a last too?? Kidding…Read on.

As you can see, with staining this type of project, the edges needed to be stained also. That required a small craft brush and a lot of time and patience, especially for NS.

The walnut stain was applied to the surface with a brush and after a few minutes Jim wiped off the excess. I believe he did two coats to the surface in order to achieve the dark color requested.

Here is the finished Alberta map…

And the finished Nova Scotia map…

And here they are together…

I think if I was hanging these in my home, I might be inclined to layer them like this…

Either way, it was a fun project with a few firsts that I thought I would share with you. Our next map project has another first for us. I’ll be sure to show you. Happy Scrolling.
Later.
