New NS Map Design

A few months ago, we started expanding our wooden NS map offerings. You may remember these:

Two new map designs.

They both sold along with a few more just like them. And that opened a whole can of worms, so to speak. Now we are going LARGE. Not our first time making a large map though. There was this one:

Part of a set.

That NS map was part of a set of maps depicting the Maritime provinces.

I could go on, but I won’t. Back to our current map. The customer asked for the backer board to be weathered. We took two 12 – 14 inch ash boards and ran them through the planer to flatten just one side keeping the other side weathered. Jim would pass them through and I would hand them back.

Here is the before and after.

Jim took these two boards and we ran them through the table saw, cutting them into five boards of random width. The backer board measures approximately 2 ft high x 3 ft long. I used grey stain to cover the freshly cut edges.

Now to cut out the map. Jim printed the map on our printer and taped it in place on 1/4 inch thick plywood.

Time for paint. I forgot to take any pictures of this process but basically I painted the navy first, then white, yellow and finally red. I let each color dry thoroughly before going on to the next color.

A lot of finicky painting but worth it.

We added a wire for hanging on the back and it will be picked up this week. I almost hate to see it go. Almost!!

Later.
