Roadside House Numbers Sign

We were contacted by a customer wanting a sign with her house numbers. Not just a square sign but a round wood slice with the bark still intact. This is what we started with.

Sugar Maple Cookie Wood Slice 1 inch sanded and treated

Shirley came for a visit and picked out her round wood slice. She also brought her house numbers and a few ideas for painting. She requested a sprig of pine branches and a pinecone. This sign will hang from a 6×6 post and arm at the end of her driveway.

My first thought was to stain the slice to give it some depth so thats what I did. Um, no.

Wood slice stained.

Too dark for my liking so we decided to paint directly on the raw wood. It was treated with pentacryl already so it should withstand the elements for a while.

She had brought the numbers along and that was the size she wanted them to be so we found an image of a pine bough and pinecone and printed a couple of copies.

Ready to start.

First I slipped a piece of tracing paper between the paper image and the wood slice, and traced the design on both sides.

Never painted a pinecone before.

She requested the numbers be black so that was the first thing I did.

That was the easy part.

Next up was the pinecone…

Here goes…

I used several shades of brown, grey and a sandy color. Then I filled in the pine needles in several shades of green.

Awesome.

Here is the sign finished. Remember since it will be hanging at the roadside, the design was painted on both sides.

Voila!

She was thrilled with the sign. I may have to take a drive someday and see it hanging in its new home.

Later.
