Sugar maple live edge planks
Today I set about to slab the remaining trunk portion of this big ol’ sugar maple tree. This is not the stump. The trunk at the stump is well, still on the stump. It was cut this high off of the ground to safely fell the tree.
This piece of wood has maxed out the sawing capacity in width for the saw mill, it just squeezed in at 24 inches wide at the crotch in the tree. The trunk is 17 inches across.
I started out cutting off 1 inch thick boards until I got to the widest portion of the log, that’s when I switched to 1/2 inch thick slabs. I want to use some of the wider boards for cutting on the scroll saw.
Part of the fun in saw milling is the discovery of what lays within the wood.
It will be interesting to see what woodworking projects can be made to take advantage of the natural design offered up by Mother Nature.
All cut up, stacked and stickers. Now its time to cover it and set it aside so it can dry for a while.
