Ice Dam

This is why I don’t like those roof brakes, or ice dam guards, or whatever you call them. I theory they work, but here’s proof that they do not. This roof faces west/southwest.

Tempterature is suppose to rise well above 0C tomorrow and to prevent the risk of water backing up, we thought it a good idea to head over and clear away a trouble spot on the homestead roof.

Ice and snow backing up.

First order of business is to scrape away the snow. No fancy gadgets here. Just a few boards, screws and a shelf bracket.

Now to get down to the trouble spot. Its clear to see the build up and pulled off the gutter (which is solid ice at this point) and a corner of the siding on the roof dormer.

Chipping away

The snow cascading down between the two dormers is almost solid ice. A steady footing is required.

Very risky

All done and siding corner fixed. Gutter is still messed up but it will have to stay like that for now.

Cleared for now.

Now on to the important stuff… putting away Mr Inflatable Snowman! It took a crowbar to get the spikes out of the ground. Leverage is your best friend in moments like this.
