This deck is in need of some real TLC. Everything needs to come out and be replaced.
Presswood (chip board) is not the ideal material for deck skirting.
Below are pictures of just how bad the rot was. As you can see, whoever put this in place used 2 x 6 treated lumber…but…they used some old piece of lumber to asct as the beam. Looks like a piece of 4 x 6 regular lumber that was given a coat of preservative. Obviously it didn’t work. It was on the verge of collaspe and all I had to do was put my weight on it and it broke apart. Completely rotten.
The chipboard that was used for skirting the side of this home is not the right product to use. Use only treated lumber or treated exterior grade plywood. As you can see everything will have to get torn out and replaced. Fortunately the deck boards on a portion of the deck were salvageable so I’ll be able to keep the homeowners cost down by reusing the deck material.
These two pictures show how far I got by the end of day one. Beams were torn out, replaced, and tied into existing beams.
The next day I finished the deck and railing.
