Reshingle a roof

Reshingling a roof.
It takes a community.

The neighbor recognized he’d need some help with a job this big and a bunch of us were willing to help out. He was re-shingling the home he grew up in. I swung by and gave him a helping hand too.

There were 32 squares of roofing, 3 dormers and 4 pitched roofs, 3/12, 4/12, 6/12 and 8/12. It involved the removal and re-installation of shingles, siding, gutters, rotten boards in the roof deck, lightening rods and repairs to the chimney mortar. This was an old house, +100 years I think. A beautiful place with lots of character. Some of the roof deck boards were 14 inches wide, a full inch thick and as long as 14 or so feet long. Lots of the old type iron nails. There were 5 people helping out for a couple days, then it was down to three of us. Minus a couple days for rain, this project took a full 2 weeks. Along with the new shingles we installed ridge vents. too.
