I made these from 1-1/2″ x 11″ pine stair tread lumber I bought a couple years back, been kicking around the workshop since then. The other pic shows the double lid coffee table and entertainment center I made about 4 years ago.

I had some fun with the design, as the table is turned around, the shelf position is switched from upper to lower. I guessed at using Golden Oak stain on the wood. Surprisingly, I got a good color match. The ends were treated with wood conditioner. One coat of stain applied with a foam pad then wiped off within a minute. Then two coats of polyurethane. Sanding between coats with steel wool. Finally, a coat of Aerowax paste.

Available at any lumber yard, this material is used to construct stairs for homes. I find it a great wood to use for projects that require that used and abused look. Antique wrought iron nails, hinges and ring pulls were purchased from a specialty hardware store. The box is built with a simple box-joint joinery. Joints were hand drawn and cut out on the bandsaw. The bottom trim molding was custom made using a 2″ multi profile router bit.
